Have you ever looked at the Windows File Explorer and gone “boy, I sure wish there was more advertising here!”? Probably not, because the mere suggestion of that is completely nuts. However, it seems Microsoft is not on the same page as everyone else. Windows Insiders (via XDA (opens in new tab)) are reporting that this is happening in the beta version of Windows 11, specifically build 22572. You’ll be glad to hear they aren’t commercial ads, trying to make you buy some new product or service....

Microsoft started this practice last year, and according to The Verge (opens in new tab), the company is once again mailing select customers a unique link that offers the opportunity to purchase an Xbox Series X via the Microsoft Store. This is similar to Sony Direct, which regularly holds invite-only PS5 restocks to sidestep scalpers and get consoles into the hands of actual gamers. Unfortunately, unlike Sony Direct, which allows wannabe console owners to sign up for the chance to be emailed an invitation, these Xbox Series X restock invitations currently appear to be dished out entirely randomly....

Netflix is getting serious about its free game offerings. Starting on July 19, it’s making the new iOS and Android versions of Into the Breach free for subscribers. For those who missed it when it debuted in 2018, Into the Breach is one of the best Nintendo Switch games of all-time, currently holding an overall average of 89 on Metacritic (opens in new tab). The fact that it’s coming to Netflix’s lineup of free mobile games, a collection that has thus far been rather unremarkable, is kind of astounding....

Text found in the iOS Netflix app and shared by developer Steve Moser on his Substack (opens in new tab), seems to all but confirm that downloads will remain exclusive to more expensive Netflix plans. That would mean no offline binging of whatever the latest no. 1 show is, or any other content for that matter, unless you’re prepared to pay more. The text also points to ad personalization options when setting up the ad-supported plan, similar to how other ad-supported services encourage you to tell them which adverts you’d be interested in....

Nokia has paired up with Austrian firm Streamview in order to manufacture a new range of affordable QLED TVs that are set to hit the European market later this month. The first indication that Netflix plans to turn the popular Horizon video game franchise into a TV show comes from a Q&A held during a recent Sony Business Briefing (relayed by a Resetera (opens in new tab) user). During this briefing, it was also reiterated that a God of War series is in development for Prime Video and a Gran Turismo TV show is also in the works. Researchers at security firm Zimperium (opens in new tab) have named the campaign “Dark Herring.” In a report posted yesterday (Jan. 26), they explained that the apps themselves actually worked as promised — as games, entertainment apps, productivity tools, photo filters and so on. (Another malware app, unrelated to Dark Herring, was found in the Google Play store a day later.) But the apps also sent many users to deceptive web pages, tailored to the users’ languages and countries of residence....

The latest update is good news for anyone who’s ever stumbled over a real-world obstacle while playing a virtual game: the PSVR2 will feature a “see-through view” feature, which will let players observe the outside world without ever taking their headsets off. The device will also include options for broadcasting reactions, setting up custom play areas and watching more traditional media content. Sony shared this information on the official PlayStation Blog (opens in new tab), where the company detailed five new features of the PSVR2 including a See-Through View, Broadcast, Customized Play Area, VR Mode and Cinematic Mode....

Color accuracy and vibrancy are huge factors in how TVs look — and often they’re something that TVs lose when you start sitting farther off to the side of your screen. It’s something we in the industry call off-axis viewing, and it turns out that QD-OLED screens do a better job of holding on to their color than both LED-LCD TVs and regular OLEDs. While that sounds like a rather useless metric — most folks do in fact sit in front of the TV — TV sizes are increasing at such a fast rate now that at some point you will almost certainly have to watch them off-axis, and then you’ll be thankful that QD-OLED TVs look so good....
